Remembrance Sunday 2024, Dumfries

Sunday, 10 November 2024 - Mark Jardine MBE DL lays a wreath at Dalbeattie War Memorial.

As HM the King laid the first wreath at the Cenotaph in London on Remembrance Sunday, so too, his representatives, the Lord-Lieutenants and their deputies were doing the same in this part of the world. Wreath laying ceremonies were held throughout Dumfries and Galloway.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Dumfries, Fiona Armstrong, attended the service at St John's church in Dumfries.

Deputy Lieutenants also laid wreaths in Moffat, Annan, Langholm and Maxwelltown. Congratulations and thanks to all those who helped organise and attended the ceremonies - from Legion Scotland, to the Veterans Garden, to the emergency services and cadets, the Bloodbikes - and many, many others. The respect and thanks you gave to remember those who died to keep us safe is second to none. 

And thanks, too, to the Veterans Garden and Dumfries and Galloway Council who organised their annual Service of Remembrance at the Crichton the night before Remembrance Sunday. With music, reading and poetry, it was a poignant evening. Plus it was extra special to see our amazing Armed Forces Champion, Archie Dryburgh, back in business after his operation. Archie was master of ceremonies and we were all delighted to see him out and about again!

Finally, a big thank you and well done to Nancy Beck from Dumfries. Nancy has helped sell many poppies for Scottish Legion over the years. A veteran collector for the charity, she is an amazing lady. Nancy was 100 this year and gets the bus in to attend military ceremonies - indeed she was at the one to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in Dumfries. We all love Nancy and she is such an inspiration to us all!
