Anyone can receive an award if they reach the required standard of merit or service. Honours lists contain a wide variety of people from different backgrounds, communities and organisations.
The honours system is managed by the UK Cabinet Office Ceremonial Secretariat, but each UK Government Department and the Devolved Administrations all have an Honours Secretary to whom you may send a nomination.

Birthday and anniversary messages
On very special occasions His Majesty The King sends congratulatory messages to people who are celebrating their:
- 100th birthday
- 105th birthday and every birthday thereafter
- 60th (Diamond) wedding anniversary
- 65th (Blue Sapphire) wedding anniversary
- 70th (Platinum) and every year thereafter

It is not necessary to apply for a birthday message if the celebrant is receiving a State Pension or other Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit and resident in the United Kingdom.
Arrange a personal visit
It is possible for a personal visit by the Lord-Lieutenant, or one of the Deputies, as the representative of His Majesty. Please arrange through the Clerk to the Lieutenancy.
